3.5 Feet Per Second or You’re On Your Own

While federal guidelines recommend that transportation agencies configure pedestrian signaling to suit an average walking speed of 3.5 fee per seconds, this is too fast for many people.

Highly vulnerable road users, including senior citizens and people with a disability, are unlikely to cross an intersection in time. In fact, observational research from Brazil (2017) showed that among a sample of 1,191 people over age 60 in Sao Paulo, nearly 96% walked slower than 3.5 feet per second. Their decreased gait speed puts them at significantly increased risk.

Our patented technology enable accurate detection of highly vulnerable road users at intersections, precise logging of crossing times, and automated extension of crossing times.
